No longer is the global economy driven by a select few major financial centers like New York, London, and Tokyo. "As societies and economies around the world have urbanized, they have upended the classic notion of a global city. Containing about one-eighth of the world's population but generating about one-third of the world's economic output, the report explores global city interconnectivity and, in the process, provides a clearer definition of what it means to be a global city - a term that is often thrown around but can be poorly understood. The Brookings report, entitled Redefining Global Cities: The Seven Types Of Global Metro Economies, examined the economic functions of the 123 largest metro areas in the world.
